Barbara L. Tate, EdD, RN, FAAN, was a long-time NEF board member, serving on the Finance Committee and as president of the organization. Dr. Tate was a former Dean of the University of Rhode Island College of Nursing and dedicated her long career to the advancement of nursing and nursing education. She was the director of Research and Studies Service at the National League for Nursing and editor of Nursing Research. Dr. Tate was the recipient of two Fulbright Scholarships. She taught at many schools and colleges of nursing in the United States and abroad. The Barbara L. Tate Scholarship was initiated after her death in 2011 by Henry Spencer, a colleague of Dr. Tate’s and past Treasurer of NEF.

Heather S. Cole, PhD, RN

2022-2023 Winner | Doctoral Degree

• Has clinical experience in medical-surgical, critical care, wound and ostomy care, and geriatric long-term acute care
• As the University of Alabama Capstone College of Nursing simulation coordinator, designed, supported, and facilitated simulation experiences for the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs
• Co-developed the Capstone SimCast, a podcast offering guidance and information related to the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice provided by the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL)
• Served as President and Secretary for the Epsilon Omega Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, member of the Graduate Nursing Student Association (GNSA) Digital Innovators Program, and co-chair for the CCN Gratitude Ambassadors and the Undergraduate Peer Mentoring Advisory Council

Jenna Magallanes, DNP, CNM, RN

2019-2020 Winner | Doctoral Degree

• Worked in multiple level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Units and the Helen Bernardy Center for Medically Fragile Children at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, CA
• Served as a board member for the Michigan Chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses and on the division of research-workforce committee through the American College of Nurse-Midwives
• Implemented a clinically-focused DNP project focused on making system changes aimed at reducing the incidence of primary Cesarean births in the United States
• Committed to becoming nursing faculty at a university and recruiting, mentoring, and increasing underrepresented minorities in nursing
